This year has been exceptional for the Emperor Moth Saturnia pavonia. The eyes on the wings of this female are a form of defence to keep birds from eating them and is said to resemble a cats face. As one of our largest day-flying moths Emperor males can be commonly seen flying frantically around heather on bogs searching out females like the on in this photo. Males tend to be smaller and richer in colour.
